PRE-CONCEPTION CARE & FERTILITY ACUPUNCTURE
At Vessel Acupuncture, we understand that the path toward parenthood is a transformative chapter in a person’s life.
For some, conception unfolds with relative ease. For others, the path may involve more time and support along the way. Wherever you find yourself in the process, we offer thoughtful, evidence-informed care that supports both reproductive health and overall well-being for you and your future family.
In Chinese medicine, preconception is considered an important window of preparation. A time to nourish the body, regulate the nervous system, support hormonal health, and create strong foundations before pregnancy.
Rather than viewing fertility in isolation, we look at the broader picture of health. Menstrual cycles, sleep, nourishment, digestion, stress, energy, and emotional well-being are interconnected and can shape reproductive health.
Our approach combines traditional Chinese medicine with modern reproductive understanding, supporting people through natural conception, IVF and assisted reproductive treatments.
Fertility care at Vessel is not simply about ovulation dates and hormone levels. It is about creating the conditions for life to emerge through good health, nourishment, regulation, circulation, and connection within the body.
HOW MANY FERTILITY ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
As a general guide, we usually recommend weekly treatments for three months during preconception preparation and ongoing weekly support throughout the first trimester
WHY WE RECOMMEND THREE MONTHS OF PRECONCEPTION CARE
Where possible, we recommend beginning acupuncture and preconception care at least three months before trying to conceive.
This timeframe aligns with important stages of egg and sperm development. The follicles involved in ovulation begin developing months before ovulation occurs, and sperm maturation also occurs over around 70–90 days.
This means that your lifestyle in the months leading up to conception influence your conception and pregnancy outcomes, as well as the intergenerational health of your family (1).
Preconception care often involves supporting:
The transition off hormonal contraception
Menstrual cycle regularity
Ovulation (we teach you how to identify ovulation and your fertile window)
Symptom-free periods
Stress
Digestion and nourishment
Sleep quality
We also strongly encourage preconception care for sperm health when there is a male partner involved.
HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE AND CHINESE MEDICINE SUPPORT FERTILITY?
In Chinese medicine, fertility is viewed as a reflection of overall health and physiological harmony.
Acupuncture supports hormonal health by influencing communication between the brain, nervous system, and reproductive organs, particularly through the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) and Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian (HPO) Axes. These systems play an important role in regulating stress responses, ovulation, menstrual cycles, and reproductive hormone signalling.
So what does that mean:
regular menstrual cycles
regular and predictable ovulation
luteal phases supported to hold a pregnancy
improved blood flow to the uterus and ovaries
regulated stress hormones and reliving anxiety
supporting sleep & recovery
reducing inflammation
Acupuncture sessions become a space to pause. A moment where the body is invited out of vigilance and back toward rest, repair, and regulation. A place where fertility can emerge.
ACUPUNCTURE FOR IVF (AND ART)
Acupuncture is increasingly used alongside IVF and assisted reproductive treatments (ART), with decades of clinical research supporting its use.
At Vessel, we tailor treatments around your specific stage of treatment, which may include:
preconception preparation
IUI (intrauterine insemination)
egg retrieval
embryo transfer support
the two-week wait
cycle recovery between IVF rounds
Our treatment focus is broadly across three areas:
enhancing blood flow to the uterus & ovaries
supporting your mental health (stress & anxiety)
reducing the side effects of IVF medication
sperm quality (if a male partner is involved)
RESEARCH FOR ACUPUNCTURE AND IVF
The current research around acupuncture and IVF shows the strongest outcomes for live birth rates are associated with regular, individualised “whole systems” Traditional Chinese Medicine care over time, rather than isolated pre- and post-transfer treatments alone (2).
For this reason, at Vessel, we prefer to support you across several months of preconception care and IVF preparation, and do not generally offer one-off pre- and post-transfer treatments. There are many larger clinics in Brisbane that offer care in this manner, and we are happy to direct one off enquiries to these dedicated teams of practitioners.
FERTILITY ACUPUNCTURIST
Lou, our degree-qualified fertility Acupuncturist, frequently undertakes post-graduate training in reproductive health, fertility acupuncture, IVF support, and integrative women’s health. She offers fertility acupuncture from Vessel on Thursdays.
Her approach combines both Eastern and Western understandings of fertility, with care that is grounded, compassionate, and personalised.
Lou practices in an integrative manner, meaning she will review your blood tests, semen analysis (if available) and incorporate western herbs and supplements alongside Chinese medicine.
We recognise that there are many different paths to creating a family, and we warmly welcome people of all relationship structures, identities, and fertility journeys. We are here to walk alongside you with thoughtful, intentional care.
